WHY DO PEOPLE WITH ASD HAVE A HARD TIME UNDERSTANDING IDIOMS.

Today's blog is presented by Accountant: Gioia Pepe (Joy-ya) (Owners Eldest Daughter) Answer: Because we most often take idioms literally. Example: Once in a blue moon. We don't really mean once in a blue moon we really just mean "Rarely."  As a child/teen with High-functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder I can answer this. When I speak on this, I am using my voice to represent people with ASD as a whole generalization, but keep in mind that everyone has their own reasons for things and we are all different and unique in our own ways.   Have you ever read Amelia Bedeila as a child? Well I have, and if you haven't no worries. Brief summery In Amelia Bedilla, she takes everything that is said to her literally in a similar way that Children and adults with ASD do. So, over time I took interest in idioms as a child, and this interest in wanting to understand helped me now as a teenager. I understand and get jokes now as supposed to when I was way younger and it would take me a minute to understand the joke, and to my response an (ooooh haha I get it now). Anyone with autism who struggles in a specific area can always grow!!! I did and you can to if you are diagnosed with ASD.
